An annual event taking place in New Delhi, the International Mango Festival lasts two days, displaying a wide variety of mangoes. Inaugurated in 1987, the festival is organised by the New Delhi Municipal Council, the National Horticultural Board, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, and the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation.
Bringing together over 45 mango growers from different parts of India, including Delhi, Gujarat, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the festival acts as an ideal platform for these growers to showcase their produce and educates visitors about the many varieties of mango through competitions and quizzes. One can also learn various ways in which mangoes can be used in cuisines. Among the over 550 varieties of this delicious fruit are shamasi, ruchika, nigarin kheria, gelchia, fazia, dhoon, dhaman, chorasya, balia, malda, himsagar, amrapali, mallika and alphonso. The festival also provides the opportunity for food industries and agro-industries that process mango into fruit juice, pickles and jams to exhibit their products. Colourful recreational events and cultural programmes are also part of this unique event.
About 80 countries annually import nearly 40,000 metric tonnes of mangoes from India. The organizers expect the yearly revenue earned from this to be increased owing to the International Mango Festival.
