If you are looking to shop and soak up some local culture when in Chennai then plan to explore the area known as George Town with its colourful markets and bazaars!
A Bit of History
George Town dates back to British colonial times when it was referred to as “Black Town”. The city’s first settlement (then called Madras), this locale came up near Fort Saint George and is very much a part of Chennai’s history.
Sarees, Silk and More!
George Town offers everything under the sun and is a great place to buy sarees and hand-woven mulberry silk at spots like the Burma Bazaar. Providing an ideal excursion from hotels and serviced apartments Chennai has to offer including Citadines OMR Chennai, George Town also features clothing, electronic goods, stationery, household items, fresh produce and more.
Pondy Bazaar
A very popular area here, the Pondy Bazaar is an ideal place to experience all the colour (and chaos!) of George Town. Apart from clothing, this is one of the best places to buy accessories, jewellery, footwear, leather bags, toys and even vegetables!
Parry’s Corner
Another highlight of George Town, Parry’s Corner is also made up of various streets, each one specialising in particular products; shop for vibrant glass bangles at Perumal Mudali Street, textiles and sarees at Godown Street, footwear at Stringers Street and stationery at Bunder Street.
